Huge Support for Corbyn and Socialist Ideas in Derby

Over one thousand people gathered at Cathedral Green in Derby at midday today to listen to Jeremy Corbyn make his second bid for the Labour leadership.

The meeting took place following public accusations by the former Blairite cabinet minister Dame Margaret Beckett that Corbyn supporters are turning the Labour Party into a “fan club”.

Speaking at the rally, Chris Williamson, the former Labour MP for Derby North who was narrowly defeated by the Tories in last year’s General Election, hit back at Beckett:

“I think she is entirely wrong in that assessment of the supporters. I’ve travelled up and down the country speaking for Mr Corbyn and the enthusiasm from supporters is for the policies – it’s about the agenda he’s putting forward – it’s anything but a fan club.”

As demonstrated in Derby today, the movement around Corbyn has generated a thirst for socialist ideas which the capitalist Blairites will never be able to quench; this is why they fear him, and why they will take every opportunity to undermine his leadership.
